The Mahabharata is one of two major Sanskrit epics of ancient India, the other being the Ramayana. The main story revolves around two branches of a family- the Pandavas & the Kauravas who, in the Kshatriya war, battle for the throne of Hastinapur. Interwoven into this narrative are several smaller stories about people living or dead and philosophical discourses. According to traditions it is believed that Krishna, himself a character in the epic, composed the Mahabharata- and dictated the verses to Ganesha, while he wrote them down.
